CONNECTIVE CUBE

Connective cube is the definitive design for a student accommodation block after many experiments and iterations with plywood. The original idea came from interlocking squares together to create enclosed space for habitation. This was then simplified into cubes, which were arranged in the same way as the interlocking pieces had been. The accommodation consists of two separate buildings parallel to each other, forming a street and giving a sense of community within. The street axis has a direct link to campus green and beyond, creating a walkway and encouraging people to walk through and engage with the surrounding building while going about day to day campus life. The accommodation is easily accessed through a number of walkways, which become more enclosed as the internal rooms are reached. The path which runs the length of the site also directs to these entrances, guiding whoever wishes to enter directly to the door of the communal area. As the communal spaces are close together and inviting, it encourages not just the residents who share it, but other residents from neighbouring blocks to come together and socialise.

The stairs in the walkway are offset from each other to make it feel like a journey. Each entrance into the building has a path leading to it with no defined door, just a large open space in the wall, making it feel more inviting. The residents can use any of the shared spaces to meet and socialise with new people.

The idea of connecting these cubes together is that it can expand as the student population grows, and so any number of cells can be achieved. Although there is the limitation of the site, the components could be used on any site to create a limitless and evergrowing accommodation block, connecting new residents with old, and expanding the campus population as a whole.
